The North Boulder Arts District put out a call for artists submissions to paint the sidewalk in a project called PLACE. Six of us were selected to paint our masterpieces on the sidewalk along Broadway in North Boulder. I used my quilt Grapefruit Sea as inspiration and used Photoshop to see it in different colorways. The painting was hard work and the sidewalk, well, it’s concrete. I had lots of help and volunteers and without them I could not have done it. We used highway paint which dries quickly and I did a lot of mixing to get a variety of colors in the blue, red, orange and gold families. My favorite volunteer was a neighborhood boy who spent hours helping. Then the bicycles rolled in and added a layer of tire tracks to the art that I hadn’t expected. The paint was already part of the PLACE. And thanks to Carol Silks for letting us use her studio to wash up and store supplies. And thanks to Ace Storage for showing my quilts in their little gallery and for throwing the finale party. —Joyce Robinson
