Nothing like a blizzard (and a power outage) in the neighborhood to help kick creativity in gear. I did the fabric pick, design, and then cutting for Big Blooms while the sun was shining and the woodstove was burning. My plan was raw-edge applique (no glue or fusible). After all, my iron was out of commission, too. I used batik “solids” and the stems are made using black fusible bias tape by Clover or Dritz. Once the electricity kicked back on (three days later!), I fused the stems down and then I free-motion quilted. —Joyce Robinson
