My favorite way to create a quilt like Big Blooms is with the raw-edge applique technique. I didn’t use a fusible product or glue on the patches. I went for a more organic look and try to design for that. Batiks don’t tend to fray very much so that also plays into it. The quilting stitch does double-duty and also is the appliqué stitch. Fusible bias tape is handy for the stems. It comes in rolls from Dritz and Clover. —Joyce Robinson
